Congrats to Elaine Ware who this weekend took the U15 title defeating Orna Murray 3/0.
Elaine Ware was crowned the new queen of Connacht she took the U15 title in emphatic fashion following along the lines of previous Carlow winners of this event – Ciara Moloney and Róisín Brennan. Elaine seeded 6th was in super form defeating the no3 seed Labhaoise Dunbar from Waterford 11-8 11-6 11-6 she then turned her guns on the no 2 seed and favourite Breanne Flynn Dublin and lost the first 11-6 but stormed back to win 8-11 11-9 11-9 in terrific game. In the final she was far too good for Órna Murray also from Waterford and won comfortably 11-8 11-6 11-8. This was Elaine’s first big competition win and will no doubt be one to watch for the future.
Katelyn Doran in the girls U17 event finished 3rd overall. Katelyn was the group winner of section B and was then paired off with the other 2 group winners to decide the overall winner. Here Katelyn was two games up on each of her opponents and could not close the games out resulting in a 3rd place result. She now knows she can compete with the best of these and it will not be long before she will be moving higher up the ramkings.
Casey Luther finished an exciting 4th in the girls U11 event and Fiona Murphy 4th in the U15 girls. Melanie Ní Bhroin had a good tournament finishing 6th in the U17 event.
Conall Murphy had 2 wins from 4 matches and finished an excellent 4th in U17 boys with Cathal Hennessy seeded 11th finishing off a good tournament with a win over the No 5 seed Daniel L’Estrange Dublin 11-7 12-10 9-11 8-11 7-11 to finish 7th.
Shaun younger brother to Cathal Hennessy had to withdraw due to injury in his 2nd match where he defeated the no 2 seed Conor O’Shea 3/0 in the U15 boys and finished 8th overall.
Jim Kenny’s tournament effectively ended when he lost his qualification match to Callum Lee 11-6 11-9 11-7
In the U19 boys event Seamus Harmon finished 6th and Enda Holohan 9th
Ryan Luther in the U13 boy’s event was seeded 12th and he finished 6th overall defeating the No 5 seed Shane Maher Tipperary in the first round.
Overall Carlow players can be pleased with their performances in this the first of the competitive season.
A couple of changes from Irish Squash
1) All tournaments will be American to 11 and you must win by 2 clear points.
2) No Open draw for the seeds 3/4 and 9/16
3) They are reverting back to the full Swiss system
These should benefit all players.
Congrats to Shaun and Cathal Hennessy and Seamus Harmon who put in great efforts at the Nordic Junior Open in Malmo, Sweden.
